GRAPHIC MATERIAL: EARLY AMERICAN POLITICAL CARTOONS AND PROPAGANDA The Library Company of Philadelphia Fall 2018 Seminar
This fall, the Library Company is pleased to offer the seminar “Graphic Material: Early American Political Cartoons and Propaganda” (October-December). Led by Dr. Will Fenton, “Graphic Material” will excavate the broadsides, engravings, political cartoons, caricatures, and propaganda that transformed early American politics. Canvasing the African Americana, John A. McAllister, and Political Cartoon Collections, Fenton will offer participants hands-on access to the Library Company’s vaunted visual culture materials. “Graphic Material” promises to be a welcome companion to election-year politicking—a glimpse at a political culture that makes today’s exchanges appear positively demure by contrast.
Several special guests from the Philadelphia Cartoonist Community will join us at the upcoming seminar! Pulitzer Prize winner Signe Wilkinson, Dwayne Booth (A.K.A Mr. Fish) and Philadelphia artist and educator Jamar Nicholas will help participants to understand the profession as it exists today and to place historical records in conversation with contemporary cartoons.
Convenes: October 23 (Signe Wilkinson) November 8 (Dwayne Booth) November 20 (Jamar Nicholas) December 4 (Signe Wilkinson)
